Five years ago, Kristen attended the Onteora High School battle of the bands; she knew many of the kids playing that night from her involvement with the Woodstock Youth Theatre. From beginning to end, she was blown away by the innovative, fresh music and energetic stage performances that every single one of the bands delivered!!

From punkabilly in prom dresses, string ensembles that rocked, and three piece bands reminiscent of the pure, raw energy of The Jam and The Ramones... it evident that these teenagers not only presented powerful performances, they had written fantastic lyrics and created their own brands of music, just bursting with talent!

This yearly high school battle is one of the few venues open to the talented teens in Ulster County and surrounding areas and this lack of venue got Garnier thinking about how wonderful it was when she was a teenager in bands... there were so many places to play. Unfortunately things have changed, most spaces like community centers and church halls that were available to young bands in the 1970’s, are unavailable to teens currently due to liability issues.

So, after watching and listening to this fantastic high school battle of the bands Garnier decided that it was time to create professional venue for these talented young musicians to perform in so their work could be honored and celebrated by not only their peers and families, but would also promote exposure to music professionals.

Well thanks to the inspiration of the participating bands at that high school battle five years ago, Garnier's desire to create positive arenas for young musicians, our first annual Garage Rumble has been born!
